Our History
Over 200 years ago, in 1797, a small committee met to organize a new church community for the southwest corner of Litchfield, then known as Bradleyville, now Bantam. Litchfield, in those days, was the fourth-largest community in the state and had many parishes. Our parish was first known as the West Church to differentiate it, and its building was located across from the Bantam Cemetery. When the building fell into disrepair, it was replaced by the present building, dedicated to St. Paul, in l843. (The especially beautiful chandelier and other lamps in the sanctuary were installed in 1886, and the building was added to in 1952 when the under-croft was created.) Over the years, St. Paul’s Church has been served by approximately 40 rectors, vicars, and priests-in-charge, and St. Paul’s Church continues to be a witness to God’s love in Bantam and the wider world.
